Bill Crawford - Original Superman Statue (1975). Commissioned by DC Comics in 1975 for the nation's bicentennial, this beautiful sculpture was created by Bill Crawford (1913-1982), who served as President of the National Cartoonists Society in 1961 and 1962, and was the chief cartoonist of the Newark Evening News from 1938 to 1961 before becoming the chief editorial cartoonist of Newspaper Enterprise Association through the 1960s and 1970s. Later turning his considerable talents to sculpture, Crawford created two of these statues for DC Comics, one of which has stood in their lobby for many years. This is the sister piece to that very statue, which has been seen by literally millions of visitors to the DC offices over the years. The piece is also featured in Harry Matetsky's excellent Adventures of Superman Collecting book, on pages 188-190. The work, cast in a bronze-colored resin, stands approximately 28" tall on a 2" black marble base and is in excellent condition. A handsome statue, Crawford has perfectly captured the essence of Superman. The power and nobility of this figure is instantly apparent, making it an outstanding artistic achievement and a unique collectible for any Superman fan. There is a brass plaque on the front of the base which reads, "1976 Bicenn./"Superman" Bronze #1/Artist William Crawford".
