TLS as president signed “Bill,” one page, 6.75 x 9, pale green White House letterhead, October 28, 1994. Letter to Wayne Dowd, a member of the Arkansas State Senate. In full: “Happy Birthday! Hillary and I hope you have a wonderful day and wish you good health and much happiness in the coming year.” After his signature, Clinton adds a short handwritten, and perhaps prophetic, postscript: “Come see me—It gets lonesome up here—and unreal sometimes.” In fine condition.

Almost halfway through his first term in office, Clinton reveals an honest glimpse of life in the White House. Only two days earlier, the president had attended a ceremony at the Jordanian seaport city of Aqaba to witness the signing of agreements between Israel and Jordan. Despite the importance of the situation, Clinton admits to feeling “lonesome” and extends an invitation to his old Arkansas colleague. Such boredom would certainly disperse a couple of weeks later as the 1994 mid-term election saw the Republican Party seize control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate after four decades of Democratic control. Personal insight into the sometimes mundane—and “unreal”—life of the chief executive.
