TLS as president, one page, 7 x 10.5, White House letterhead, March 15, 1995. Letter to longtime New York senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, in part: “I found the meeting constructive, and I was pleased by the level of consensus on some issues, such as child support enforcement. As the Senate Finance Committee begins hearings this week, I am encouraged by the bipartisan spirit to enact welfare reform legislation that helps rather than hurts poor families. I share the hope expressed by you on Wednesday that the Senate ‘will perform its Constitutional role of giving some thought to what happens, and taking some time in doing it.’ Together, I hope we can develop comprehensive reform which stresses the basic American values of work and responsibility. I share your concern regarding the Family Support Act and feel it would be a mistake to turn back now on a program that shows real promise.” In fine condition, with two filing notations. As chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously opposed President Clinton's proposal to expand healthcare coverage to all Americans; despite their political differences, however, the two retained a cordial and professional relationship.
