TLS as president, one page, 6.75 x 9, White House letterhead, May 20, 1997. Letter to Reverend Stan Easty, one of Clinton’s closest friends and spiritual advisors. In full: “Thanks for your recent letter. I do hope Jennifer received a good report from her checkup following surgery. Our prayers continue for her and your entire family. There is lots of enthusiasm about the FDR Memorial, and rightly so. I appreciate your sentiments and share your great respect for our former President. Please give my greetings to Reba. Your ongoing prayerful support for me and my family is greatly appreciated. Take care and God bless you both.” In fine condition, with a light diagonal crease extending down from top edge.

Clinton’s thanks for Easty’s ‘ongoing prayerful support for me and my family’ refers to what was an ongoing lawsuit filed against Clinton by former Arkansas state employee Paula Jones, a case then before the Supreme Court. Jones alleged that she had been the subject of unwarranted advances by Clinton during his term as Arkansas governor. Though president requested that any hearing on the charges be postponed until after his presidential term in office ended, the Supreme Court rejected that argument exactly one week after Clinton thanked Easty for his thoughtfulness. A few weeks earlier, Clinton participated in the dedication of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C., a fellow Democrat whom Clinton clearly admired.
