Fabulous certificate with a big horn sheep pictured in the vignette and stamped on the gold seal. This is the earliest dated Nebraska oil stock certificate we have ever seen. Can't remember seeing any pre-1900. Aurora, Nebraska printed on the masthead. Issued to and signed by the company president, J.N. Cassell for 50 shares in 1889. Small chink in the bottom border has been repaired on the reverse. Hardly noticable. Top edge uneven. A Nebraska historical marker explains that the earliest ìpublicized report of oil in Nebraska had been an 1883 newspaper account of a ëvein of petroleumí discovered in the same county.î After 57 years of dry holes, the first commercial oil well was drilled in the state in 1940. Richardson County had an oil boom for three years with production five miles east of the ìvein of petroleumî first reported in 1883. This is a large size certificate measuring 12 1/2" x 9 1/2". Uncanceled.
