The Big Creek mining district was established in 1863 and gave rise to small mining towns such as Canyon City, Montrose, Mineral City, Watertown, and Lander City. These towns were short lived as accessible ore dwindled and Austin prospered. The towns of Big Creek were waning fast by 1866. Big Creek heyday, in 1864, was host to Artemus Ward, the famous lecturer humorist, at the Young America saloon. Approximately 150 miners paid $2.00 each to listen to Ward while he was on his American tour.
