Stage name of J. P. Richardson (1930–1959) whose big voice and exuberant personality made him an early rock and roll star. He tragically died in a plane crash along with fellow musicians Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens. Handwritten lyrics, unsigned, one lined page, 3.25 x 6.5, no date. The Big Bopper pens the lyrics to an apparently unpublished song entitled “Dim Dim Lights, (Music Soft & Slow).” In part (spelling and grammar retained): “Dim, Dim Lights Music soft & slow / Memories got me felling [sic] way down low / People around me / a laughin and a dancing / But I keep thinking / of Past romancing.” Handsomely double-matted and framed with two images to an overall size of 15.25 x 22. In fine condition. Although this song went unrecorded, it was probably inspired by—or served as the inspiration for—early rock and roller Bill Haley’s 1955 hit, ‘Dim, Dim the Lights, (I Want Some Atmosphere).’ A very bold, clean example of the Big Bopper’s songwriting talents. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA and a full letter of authenticity from REAL. The James Collings Collection.
