Signature of John Bidwell on London & San Francisco Bank check #5069, payable to Baker and Hamilton, $201.00, dated Feb'y 20, 1874. Signed by Baker & Hamilton on back. Red ink. Stamp in blue ink on lower right stating Receiving Teller, Feb 24 1874, London & S.F. Bank. Revenue Stamp type RNC in orange in center of check. Note: John Bidwell (1819 - 1900) gained fame as a California pioneer, soldier and legislator. In 1841, at age 22, he was one of the first emigrants on the California Trail. He is known as the founder of Chico, CA and for his expansive ranch, now Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park. Bidwell made his fortune from discovering gold on the nearby Feather River. His marriage in 1868 was attended by President Andrew Johnson and future President Ulysses S. Grant. He later went on to serve in the California Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. Bidwell undertook three unsuccessful campaigns for Governor of California as well as US President in the 1892 general election as the nominee from the Prohibition Party. John Bidwell's autobiography, Echoes of the Past, was published in 1900. The Bidwell Family Papers are held at the Bancroft Library.
