This Bi disc stand is made of wood and was carved in China in the 18th century, during the Qing Dynasty. It rests on two simple panels, connected at their centre, where there is a semi-circular reserve to display the Bi disc. Each element is richly decorated with carving and reticulation; the corner elements are shaped like dragons with big heads and long tails, rearing up. The central part underneath the Bi disc frame shows two dragons fighting for a pearl in an elaborate, reticulated relief carving. The two feet panels are connected by another carving – showcasing bats and peaches – traditional Chinese sings for long life. The reticulated field above them shows Buddha’s hand citrus fruits. This stand was probably originally used to hold a large Bi disc – a jade ornament with a hole in the middle, used for ritual purposes. Apart from Bi discs, the stand may well have been used to hold a gong or a mirror. The Bi disc stand is in good, but used, condition with traces of age. Particularly around the carved corner elements, there is visible material loss and repaired (glued) breakages. One of the decorative carvings on the front left foot also shows material loss. There are notches and signs of use in various places, but they remain nearly unnoticeable due to the rich carvings and the mesmerizing patina. One of the back elements is somewhat lose, another has remnants of glue. The top right corner of the suspension also has remnants of glue. The reverse is left plain. The stand measures around 58 cm (height); 49.5 cm (width) and 30 cm (depth) with feet. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
