There were great hopes for the Lewis District when valuable silver deposits were found at the Betty O'Neal Mine during the summer of 1881. This certificate would have been sold at the height of that excitement. Disaster in 1881 and 1883 and the decline of the Lewis District led to the end of the productive period of mining around 1885.
