TLS signed “Bette D. Merrill,” two pages, 6 x 8, Witchway letterhead, March 29, 1956. Letter to a reporter. In part: “Well—you certainly have it as far as I am concerned—I think your persistence is admirable—in light of the fact that also at the convention—I left you flat—but as I explained—not knowing the background of you and me—and with my head giving me no end of trouble—and the lateness of the hour—all conspired to foil you again. Your remarks about the academy seem more than unusually perceptive. Your lead sentence for your article is more than justified—and I think it also an interesting one. I don’t feel columnists have it in for anyone really. They have to fill their columns and make them interesting—and remarks of a derogatory nature are more interesting reading than those of a more complimentary nature. I also did not understand the award going to the writers of ‘Interrupted Melody.’ I also thought the camera work in Summertime so great that I don’t know how any other camera man could win—but for the actor and actress I was delighted—Miss Magnini is a really great artist—and it is time that America recognized her as such. The feeling about Maine I have—but even that feeling would not make me enthusiastic about a political figure if I really didn’t feel that way—I think Muskie a very exceptional man—and more than that he is responsible for making Maine a two party state once more—and therefore all candidates have to be of a better calibre—and that can’t help but mean progress for Maine—and there is room for a lot of it here. Or anywhere for that matter…If ever you are around these parts again—drop me a line before hand and we will try to make up for your last visit—and I promise if I am taking a bath I will remedy the situation immediately. If I could make any suggestion to someone who wants to stop by and is unknown…send a wire of warning—or a note…some very strange people arrive at our door—you obviously not one of them—but one does grow a bit wary.” In very good condition, with scattered creases, toning, and soiling.
