Betout, Six costume studies of characters from L'Avare, each pencil, watercolour and bodycolour,...
Betout, Six costume studies of characters from L'Avare, each pencil, watercolour and bodycolour, each signed lower right, and most inscribed with character's name upper right, each 25 x 15.5 cm framed as four pictures The studies depict the costumes of various of the characters of Moliere's play, L'Avare (The Miser), first shown in Paris at the Theatre du Palais-Royale on 9th September 1668, and played by the Troup de Roi. L'Avare, derived from the Roman comic-poet Plautus, was the least successful of the three productions presented in 1668, as avarice was not considered a vice during this period, and as a result the subject was too sternly handled for its audience. Two of the pictures bear paper labels verso, stating that Betout was the Chief Designer for the Comedie Francais of Paris, and are dated 1925. £50-70
