This is a Bessie Smith - Empress of the Blues record album by Columbia Records. It's from the Hot Jazz Classics and is album #4 in a series of re-issues of the original records that made jazz history. The album has a great cover photo of Bessie Smith, with a big grin. "Ma" Rainey, sometimes referred to as the pioneer blues singer, sponsored Bessie as a little girl at the age of tweleve. Bessie's Smith hit her stride in 1919 and by 1926 she was making two grand a week. Down south the colored folks would line up for blocks on the day a new Bessie Smith Columbia Record was received by the music shops. She was inspirational to such greats as Benny Goodman, Jack Teagarden, and Bix Beiderbecke and was usually accompanied on her records by the finest jazz musicians in the country.
