One of the most illustrious artists of children, Bessie Pease Gutmann (1876-1960) produced exceptional paintings of sleeping babies, adorable children, new mothers, and happy families, which evoke a range of pleasurable emotions from tenderness to peace. Many of her paintings from 1905 to 1950 have been widely reproduced as some 600 color prints; the original prints are in high demand by collectors and dealers. She was one of the most successful female artists of her time.<p>This pair, "In Disgrace" (1935) and "The Reward" (1936), are two of her most popular. Bessie used her daughter Lucille and the neighbor's collie puppy Rusty as models for these. The story goes that Lucille and Rusty had been playing with a ball that bounced into Bessie's flower garden: Rusty trampled the flowers in doggish delight in getting the ball to continue the game. Bessie sent Lucille (and Rusty, as the viewer can see) into the corner as punishment "...Till it was time for Tea" and then painted the picture. M. Leona Harig wrote a poem labeled the same for "In Disgrace". For Lucille's (and Rusty's) exoneration, Bessie the next year painted "The Reward" and wrote a poem for it entitled the same.
