French impressionist painter who studied with many gifted painters, including Corot. She formed a close friendship with Manet, who became her brother-in-law, and modeled for several of his best-known paintings. Her own later work inclined toward pure Impressionism in its rendering of light, while retaining an unusual smoothness of brushwork. Her paintings formed an important addition to all but one Impressionist exhibit from 1874 to 1885. ALS in French, signed “B. Morisot,” one page, 4.25 x 7, May 6. Letter to an unidentified gentleman. In full (translated): “Today I shall be delivering to Minard’s the small painting of the Isle of Wight. Ask 300 for it and do not sell it for less than 270. Did you send my painting to Mr. Pissarro?” In very good condition, with scattered mild toning and foxing, small repair to paper loss to lower right edge, and creasing to lower corners.
Morisot—a ‘rejected’ Impressionist painter whose work was undervalued and underappreciated for more than a century—did find some success when it came to the sale of her painting. Although Impressionism was dominated by male artists, Morisot found a niche creating beautiful sea views, such as those from the Isle of Wight. Among her friends was fellow artist Camille Pissaro, one of the fathers of Impressionism who is referenced here. During the 19th century, haute bourgeois women neither worked nor did they aspire to achieve recognition outside the home—and they certainly did not sell their modest artistic accomplishments! Exquisite Impressionistic content.
