Bert Stern is mainly famous for the ‘Last Sitting’ with Marilyn Monroe; motifs from this series are very sought after collectors’ items

This shot from 1962 by Bert Stern depicts the icon Marilyn Monroe during a photo shoot for the US Vogue. She even exposes herself naked in some of the photographs in ‘The Last Sitting’. Marilyn died only six weeks later. This photograph shows the actress deep in thought and almost vulnerable, her face placed into her right hand, revealing her beautiful profile. The publication ‘Bert Stern, Marilyn’s Last Sitting, Munich 1982’ with the dedication ‘For Rolf with Compliments’ comes with the photograph and it is signed by the artist. A certificate of authenticity with title and signature by the artist is also enclosed.



The pigment print is numbered ‘11/25’, titled ‘Marylin’ and signed in red chalk. Verso it is signed, bears the copyright stamp of the artist and is dated ‘2012’. The print is in very good condition. The dimensions are 48 x 33 cm.



Bert Stern (1923-2013)

Bert Stern is especially known for his photographs of Marilyn Monroe for Vogue magazine. Since 1949 he worked as the art director at the fashion magazine Mayfair, which fostered his interest in photography. He made his first pictures as a soldier in the Korean War and in 1953 followed a campaign for Smirnoff vodka. One of his pictures made the cover of Vogue magazine in 1960, allowing him to work with numerous celebrities from the film industry such as Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot on photo shoots. In 1962 he worked on a three-day shoot with Marilyn Monroe, known today as ‘The Last Sitting’ and making Bert Stern worldwide famous. (tm)
