Bergmann Theodore Model 1896 Number 3 with Scarce Original Leather Holster
These is a very early example of a 1896 Number 3, variation 2, semi-automatic pistol as produced by the Bergmann company in 6.35mm. Theodore Bergman was a pioneer in developing semi-automatic pistols in Europe in the late 1890s and early 1900s right along side Mauser, Borchardt, Luger and Walther. These early commercial pistol are very difficult to find as few were produced and most were retained in Europe with those surviving example being brought back by returning GIs after WWII. These model was his truly successful commercial pistol and it has the distinctive slide, flat top bolt and top cover with the thin, lightweight firing pin. This specific model has the forward integral magazine similar to the Mannlicher rifle and pistol that loads through the top with. The right side of the pistol has the small Bergman Factory logo of Theodore Bergman standing holding a cross in his right hand with sun rays emanating from behind him. The right side is also marked "PISTOLET/BERGMAN" with the serial number 3189 on the lower barrel assembly. The left side is marked with "PATENT/BREVET/S.G.D.G." and the rear section of the barrel and forward section of the receiver has a small Crown over "U" proof. It is fitted with a set of walnut checkered grips. The holster that accompanies the pistol as noted is an original 1896 leather holster with a single flap with a small brass closure on the one edge with a small ammunition pouch on the front with a leather pouch on the side of the brass cleaning rod, which is also included. It has no markings but fits the pistol perfectly and it has a single belt loop on the back.

Very good with an old arsenal type reblued finish with good clear and distinct markings. The pistol that still retain fairly flat and square surfaces overall with just a hint of rounding on a couple of the corners. The grips are in very fine condition showing nice checkering on both sides with just minimal handling marks. The holster is in very fine condition with a nice old age medium brown color to the leather showing some light rub spots on the front of the holster. The stitching is tight overall and the belt loop on the back has a tear in the middle about half way through.
