Soldier, politician, and businessman (1744-1813) who served in the Revolutionary War and became the first Secretary of the Navy under President John Adams. ALS signed "Ben Stoddert," one page, 7.75 x 9.75, May 29, 1803. Handwritten letter to John Mason, president of the Bank of Columbia, concerning the satisfaction of a mortgage. In part: "I have not time now, to enter into a detail of the circumstances relative to this transaction-I have merely to request, that the other part of the debt being settled, this 300 Ds may remain until my return-& that no pretence may be afforded…to force the sale of the lots at public sale." In fine condition, with a few small edge tears.
