Benjamin Stoddert 1806 Autograph Letter Signed
Benjamin Stoddert 1806 Autograph Letter Signed “Ben Stoddert”. One page, 8” x 9”, March 5, 1806, endorsements on verso. Benjamin Stoddert (1751-1813) served as the country's first Secretary of the Navy from 1798 to 1801. After leaving the office his financial fortunes declined due to poor investments and land speculation. This letter certainly attests to Stoddert's financial condition at the time. He writes in part: “I send 3 notes overdue in Balt. Which the people are ready to pay…I have been striving to keep them to aid in a payment to the bank tomorrow, but my griping wants will not permit me. I want money for them…”. The letter has the usual fold creases, the paper is toned with age, else very good condition. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
