October 11, 1787-Dated Post Revolutionary War Period, Handwritten Manuscript Militia Muster Document Signed, “Benj(amin) Spaulding,” Townsend, Massachusetts, Fine.


This original Handwritten Document measures 8.25” x 6.5” being an Order to Josiah Burge, one of the Corporals of the South Company (of militia) in Townsend, Massachusetts. Some folds with small edge chips and splits, modest soiling, original paper and was seal intact at the upper left. This militia Order requiring him to, in part: "... notify and warn all the men whose names are in the List herewith Committed to you - that they assemble and meet at the Training field by the Meetting (sic) house in said Town... in order to Chuse (sic) a Captain and Compleet (sic) the Company with officers agreable (sic) to orders from Col. Wright ..." (Signed) “Benj Spaulding Lieut” at bottom right. Josiah Burge has signed on reverse that he has complied. Accompanied by the original manuscript list measuring 5.5” x 12.5” with the written names of 65 men, each being checked off, and 10 signed names at lower right. Benjamin Spaulding (1743-1832), was born and died in Townsend. Had the rank of Lieutenant during the Revolutionary War and answered the call for the Alarm on Lexington and Concord, April 19, 1775. He served 18 days. (2 items)
