<B>Benjamin Prentiss Autograph Document Signed</B></I> "<I>Prentiss.</B></I>" One-page handwritten document, measures 7.7" x 8.7", and is dated March 4, 1862. Benjamin Prentiss fought in the Mexican-American War and the Civil War, rising to the rank of General. He was captured at the Battle of Shiloh along with 2200 other Union troops. He is often credited with holding the Confederate Army at bay allowing General Grant to continue his trek into the South unfettered. The letter contains some battle content: it reads in part, "<I>...We had news last evening of another repulse of our forces at Manassas & the death of McLellan</B></I> [sic].<I>The news generally credited for an hour or two was by the abolitionists well recd particularly because the death of Mc. Some even going so far as to say that if he was killed it could compensate for the loss of a battle...</B></I>" <BR><BR>The letter is in Good condition; it has the usual folds and some ink smearing.
