Partly-printed DS as president, signed “Benj. Harrison,” one page, 8 x 10, February 21, 1890. President Harrison orders the secretary of state to affix the seal of the United States to “three (3) envelopes addressed to 1) the Emperor of Germany, on the death of Queen Augusta, 2) King of Portugal, on birth of a son, 3) Marshal da Fonseca, accrediting Robert Adams, Jr., as Minister to the United States of Brazil.” The document is archivally sleeved in acid-free Mylar and is in fine condition, with a uniform shade of mild toning.

Life, death, and politics was all in a day’s work for the twenty-third president of the United States, as witnessed by this document. Bolstering America’s foreign policy was an important part of Harrison’s administration, as around this period, the first Pan American Congress met in Washington, establishing an information center that later became the Pan American Union. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
