Full free frank, 7.75 x 6.25, folded to an overall size of 5.25 x 3.5, completed in Franklin’s hand to “To The Rev. Mr. Clap, President of the College at New Haven" (referring to Yale University). Franked, “Free, B. Franklin” along the lower left corner. In very good condition with light to moderate overall soiling, light spreading to the ink, and Franklin’ signature a shade light.
Thomas Clap (also spelled Thomas Clapp) (1703-1767) was the fifth rector and first president of Yale University. His formulation of a new code of laws for Yale became the first book printed in New Haven in 1745. Clap was in constant touch with Franklin and other colonial men of science concerning experiments here and overseas. His love of science was so great that Yale became the site of the first planetarium in the US. He later prepared a well-received paper on meteors that he presented before the Royal Society in London. An expert on Newton, many historians view him as having been far ahead of his time in respect to most scientific matters, although he did argue in one sermon (mistakenly we must add) that the use of artificial light was dangerous to Christian morals. Interestingly, Franklin so favored Yale, from which he was awarded an honorary degree in 1753, that he gave the university the equipment that was used to conduct the first electrical experiments in New England.
