Scarce Benjamin Franklin Figure Titled “GL Washington”
c. 1876 Centennial Era, Historical Staffordshire Polychrome Figure of Benjamin Franklin titled, “GL Washington,” 10” tall, Choice Near Mint.
c. 1876 Staffordshire Figure of Benjamin Franklin titled “GL (General) Washington,” measuring 10” tall and 3.5” at its base. Decorated in rich colorful polychrome enamel. His coat is painted dark blue with gilt trim, white breeches and black shoes with some wear to the light gilt name upon the base. One small firing flaw is hidden behind the left shoe in the base, as made. Listed as AI.21 on page 233 of Arman’s “Anglo-American Ceramics Part I”. Franklin is shown standing, holding a document in his right hand and his tri-corner hat with his left arm. The facial details are undeniably those of Benjamin Franklin erroneously titled as “GL (General) Washington.” An excellent example of this decorative British export to America for display. Very rarely encountered.
