Benjamin Franklin Historical Staffordshire Polychrome Figure Being Erroneously Identified as George Washington!
c. 1876 Centennial Era, Rare Historical Staffordshire Polychrome Figure of Benjamin Franklin Erroneously Identified and Titled, “GL Washington,” Large Size 16” tall, Choice Near Mint.
This very large handsome and colorful Staffordshire Figure of Benjamin Franklin is erroneously identified and titled on its base as “Gl (General) Washington.” With pedestal the complete ceramic measures 16” tall and 5” at its base. Decorated in polychrome enamel, the coat is white with gilt trim, waistcoat is white with purple design, white breeches and black shoes with gilt buckles. Listed as AI.21 on page 233 of Arman’s “Anglo-American Ceramics Part I”. Benjamin Franklin is shown standing, holding a document in his right hand and his tri-corner hat with his left arm. The facial details are undeniably those of Benjamin Franklin, the base erroneously titled as “GL (General) Washington.” An excellent example of this decorative British export to America. Very rarely encountered and most impressive for display.
