Benjamin Franklin document signed as Governor of Pennsylvania, dated 30 August 1786, appointing Edward Shippen President of the Court of Common Pleas for Philadelphia. Document reads, ''The Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, To all to whom these presents shall come, Greeting. Know Ye, that Edward Shippen Esquire whose name is subscribed to the Instrument of Writing hereto annexed was at the time of subscribing the same, President of the Court of Common Pleas in and for the County of Philadelphia in the said Commonwealth duly appointed and commissioned. And full faith and credit is ought to be given to him as such. Given in Council, under the hand of His Excellency Benjamin Franklin Esq. President, and the Seal of the State, at Philadelphia, this thirtieth Day of August in the Year of our Lord, one thousand, seven hundred and eighty six.'' Signed boldly ''B. Franklin'', and also signed by James Trimble for John Armstrong as Junior Secretary. Original State seal is affixed to left margin of document in white paper over red wax. Seal contains a small crack, though still intact and in very good condition. Also includes a companion document, a land grant dated 26 August 1786, signed by aforementioned Edward Shippen. Near fine condition.
