ALS signed “Benjamin N. Cardozo,” two pages, 8 x 10.5, State of New York Court of Appeals letterhead, November 28, 1919. Early letter offering a fine comment on the legal profession, to "Surrogate Fowler" (Robert Ludlow Fowler), replying to a letter containing "a copy of the correspondence on the subject of your portrait." In part: "Lawyers for many years to come will consult the scholarly opinions from your pen which have given dignity and distinction to the records of the Surrogate's Court. I rejoice that the opportunity to recall the features and bearing of their author will also be preserved. I cannot tell you, my dear Mr. Surrogate, with what regret I view you approaching retirement. You have ever forgotten the high and solemn significance of the administration of the law; and your example has helped to communicate to the bar an appreciation of the practice of our profession as a great and noble calling." In fine condition, with light toning.
