Two checks, each filled out in another hand and signed by Butler, "Benj. Butler," dated June 17, 1874 and December 27, 1875. The first is payable to future Secretary of the Navy William E. Chandler for $3,000 (endorsed by Chandler on the reverse), and the second is payable to Col. Jonas H. French, a Union officer who had served as acting military mayor of New Orleans for two weeks in 1862. In overall very good to fine condition.
