Benjamin Aranda and Christopher Lasch
prototype Quasi cabinet
Phurniture, Inc.
USA, 2007
lacquered multi-density fiberboard
72 w x 17.75 d x 31 h inches
Aranda and Laschs Quasi cabinet was inspired by the quasicrystal, a unique structure with both crystalline and non-crystalline properties; it is distinct in that its structural make up never repeats itself twice. While remaining structurally ordered, quasicrystals appear spontaneous and chaotic, thus challenging our understanding of patterns, repetition and order. This cabinet is the prototype aside from the edition of ten. The doors of this cabinet are each supported by four hinges differing from the production run which utilized only two hinges per door. Two doors conceal one single fixed shelf.
Provenance:
Phurniture Inc., New York | Private collection, New York
