ALS in Italian, signed “Mussolini,” two pages, 5 x 8, Ministry of Foreign Affairs letterhead, June 13, 1923. Letter to General Attilio Teruzzi, commander of Italy’s Fascist militia. In full (translated): “Please go immediately to Bari to solve a very delicate and complex fascist matter. One must have the courage to eliminate and you have certainly shown that you possess this courage. There is in the air an idiotic unleashing of electoral ambitions, alas! I would appreciate confirmation of this.” In fine condition. Accompanied by an unsigned portrait.

Il Duce was none too pleased to learn of the “idiotic” plan of leaders in the southern Italian city of Bari, a city he had made his headquarters for imperial ventures in the eastern Mediterranean, to partake in an election. The authoritarian and totalitarian dictator here directs Teruzzi—one of his most enthusiastic underlings and the Fascist Party’s deputy-secretary—to look the “delicate and complex” matter...before taking steps to quash any threat to his leadership. This letter reveals Mussolini’s cold-hearted nature that would plunge Italy into war.
