<B>Benin (Nigeria)</B></I><BR>Trumpet-shaped Object<BR>Ivory<BR>Height: 27 ½ inches Max. dia. at open end: 2 3/8 inches<BR><BR>This long non-functional trumpet-shaped object contains a rattling element housed within a rectangular cavity a quarter of the way below the top, which features a standing figure wearing a wrapper and holding before him two short staff-like objects. Just beneath that figure is an endless knot, then the opening for the rattle, then a plain cylindrical section containing the trumpet mouthpiece, and below that is a kneeling female figure with bare breasts, holding a bowl before her. Lower still is a plain section, while the open end of the trumpet is embellished with geometric designs. The entire surface has a darkened encrustation. Near the open end there are several cracks and some surface losses.<BR><BR> Provenance: Thomas D.
