Bengal Sultanate, Danujamardana Deva (Saka 1339-1340 /AH 819-821 /1416-1418 AD), Silver Tanka, Obv: Bengali legend "Sri Sri Danuja Mardana Deva" within circle, Rev: Bengali legend "Sri chandi charana parayana" within square, 9.76g, 27.65mm, (Similar to G&G # B319), toning usual chop marks, about extremely fine, Very Rare.
Note: Danujamarddana Deva, also known as 'Raja Ganesha' ascended to the throne of the Bengal Sultanate in the Saka era 1339 (AH 819 /1416 AD). He played a pivotal role in establishing Hindu rule in Bengal and adopted the title 'Danuja Marddana Deva.' Emerging from his origins as a Hindu landlord in Bhaturia, North Bengal, he initially served in Ilyas' court during the time of Ghiyas-ud-din Azam Shah. Subsequently, he continued to serve successive Sultans of Bengal until he eventually seized control of Bengal upon the demise of Sultan Bayazid.
Raja Ganesha's rise to power was facilitated by the vulnerability of the preceding Ilyas Shahi dynasty. While there has been debate regarding the identification of 'Raja Ganesha' as 'Danujamarddana Deva,' the historical evidence suggests that he was able to mint coins in Pandua (Firuzabad), Sunargaon, and Chatgaon during his reign, signifying his control over a significant portion of Bengal. Notably, he stands as the first ruler to issue coins in the Bengali script and language, dating them in the Saka era, marking a significant historical milestone.
