Pope, born Giacomo della Chiesa (1854–1922), who reigned from 1914 until his death. Benedict’s pontificate was dominated by World War I, which he termed “the suicide of Europe,” and its turbulent aftermath. Maintaining strict neutrality, he advanced several peace proposals and did much to aid war victims. Impressive manuscript apostolic blessing, in Italian, signed “Benedictus PP. XV,” 18 x 26.25, dated August 26, 1917. Blessing is presented to Reverend Bernardo Sinne, and features a 10.75 x 14.5 profile portrait of the Holy Father. In fine condition, with overall silvering to photo, and some scattered light toning and soiling to edges. Benedict’s bold signature measures an impressive 8” long.
