Oil on board cubist still life painting, featuring vase, cup, and mug. Signed and attr. Ben Nicholson (British, 1894-1982) on bottom right corner. 11.5 x 15 inch (29.21 x 38.1 cm). Nicholson was born in Denham, Buckinghamshire, and was the son of the artists William Nicholson and Mabel Pryde. He studied at the Slade School of Art, 1910-11. He spent 1912 to 1914 in France and Italy, and was in the United States in 1917-18. He married the artist Winifred Roberts in 1920. Over the next three years they spent winters in Lugano, Switzerland, then divided their time between London and Cumberland. In 1931, Nicholson's relationship with the sculptor Barbara Hepworth resulted in the breakdown of his marriage to Winifred. He and Hepworth married in 1938 and divorced in 1951. Nicholson lived in London from 1932 to 1939, making several trips to Paris in 1932-3, visiting the studios of Picasso, Braque, Arp, Brancusi and Mondrian. From 1939 to 1958 he lived and worked in Cornwall, before moving to Switzerland. He returned to London in 1974. Nicholson's earliest paintings were still lifes influenced by those of his father. In the 1920s he bega painting figurative and abstract works inspired by Post Impressionism and Cubism. He produced his first geometric and abstract reliefs in 1933. He first exhibited in 1919, at the Grosvenor Gallery and Grafton Galleries. His first one-man show was held at the Twenty-one Gallery, London in 1924. From 1924 to 1935 he was a member of the Seven and Five Society, and in 1933 he joined Unit One, founded by Paul Nash. In 1937 Nicholson, Naum Gabo and the architect Leslie Martin edited Circle: International Survey of Constructive Art. Circle identified Nicholson with a group of like-minded artists and architects who wanted to apply 'constructivist' principles to public and private art, advocating mathematical precision, clean lines and an absence of ornament. In 1952 Nicholson won first prize at the Carnegie International, Pittsburgh. He was awarded the first Guggenheim International painting prize in 1956, and the international prize for painting at the Sao Paulo Bienal in 1957. He received the Order of Merit in 1968. Numerous retrospective exhibitions of his work have been held, including shows at the Venice Biennale and Tate Gallery in 1954-5, Kunsthalle, Berne in 1961, Museum of Fine Arts, Dallas in 1964, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo in 1978, and Tate Gallery in 1993-4. Helped by wide international exposure in British Council tours during the 1940s and 1950s and by the championing of the writer Herbert Read, Nicholson's work came to be seen, with Henry Moore's, as the quintessence of British modernism. Auction is in US Dollars. All items are available for examination and inspection prior to sale. Prospective bidders are encouraged to examine all items in which they have an interest. Terms
All sales are subject to 888 Auctions' Terms and Conditions of Sale. Bidding is available by live in-house bidding and absentee. A 20% buyer's premium is added to the hammer price of each lot. PAYMENT BY, BANK DRAFT, CERTIFIED CHEQUE OR WIRE TRANSFER ONLY. The auctioneer and 888 Auctions shall have the right to withdraw any item at any time for any reason and to default any sale in the event of an error or dispute. The auctioneer will also have full discretion to reopen the bidding, cancel the sale or re-offer and resell the property. Should a dispute arise after the auction, our sale record is conclusive.
Absentee Bids
Arrangements for absentee bidding can be made by completing and submitting the Absentee Bid Form by 5:00 pm the day prior to sale day. This form can be obtained by emailing or calling our office. All bids must be secured with a credit card number. All absentee bids will be executed in a fair, competitive and confidential manner. While every effort is made to execute and honour absentee bids, 888 Auctions is not responsible for failure to execute a bid and is not liable for any losses incurred as a result of failure to execute absentee bids. In case of identical bids, the first bid received will take precedence. Where appropriate, written bids will be rounded down to the nearest amount consistent with the auctioneer's bidding increments.
Live Internet Bidding
Live internet bidding is available during the auction. 888 Auctions cannot be held liable for live internet bids that are not sent, received, or executed by the administrator. If you are bidding live on-line, please bid quickly because there is a time delay in receiving these live bids.

Ownership
Item ownership is conveyed immediately following the fall of the auctioneer's hammer. While we try to handle and store all items with great care, 888 Auctions will have no liability for any loss or damage to an item after the hammer has fallen. Bad checks or non-payment of purchases will be prosecuted by 888 Auctions to the fullest extent permissible by law and the names of offenders will be announced to the public and to other auction firms. Buyer pays actual shipping costs, plus handling charges and agrees purchases will be removed within five (5) days of sale. The auction house items may be resold if terms for removal are not met. A minimum storage fee of $5 per day, not to exceed $20 per month will be charged to buyers & consignors for items left at our gallery. As the winning bidder, it is the responsibility of the buyer to arrange and pay for pick-up, packing, and shipping of all items. The buyer must contact a company (e.g. UPS Freight, FedEx Freight) to pick up the item(s) from 888 Auctions, pack the item(s), and ship the item(s) to the buyer. We will not ship any items on behalf of any winning bidder and will not release your item to a shipper without written instructions from you.
Import and Export Regulations Regarding Endangered Species
Some items in our auctions require special permits in order to leave the country, either due to their value and cultural significance, or because they contain parts from species protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), for example rhinoceros horn, whalebone, tortoiseshell or ivory. If you have any questions about whether a lot may require a permit in order to be shipped to you, we recommend that you discuss the matter with a local customs broker. 888 Auctions can provide assistance in acquiring the necessary permits; however due to the process involving multiple levels of government, please be prepared to face added delays and costs incurred in the shipment of your lots. It is the sole responsibility of the buyer to ensure that the property is properly imported into the buyer's country. If you participate in the auction and as a result, purchase property that you plan to ship to another country, you agree that you are responsible for familiarizing yourself with and complying with any and all applicable import rules and regulations.
The company make no representation or warranty and accepts no liability whatsoever to the seller, the buyer, or any third party in respect of the availability or issuance of valid import and export permits or the existence or exercise of pre-emption or other rights to purchase by governmental or regulatory authorities anywhere.
Any and all of the conditions may be waived or modified in the sole discretion of 888 Auctions.
