Attorney, politician, and suffragist Belva Ann Lockwood autograph note signed, dated 24 Feburary 1906, on her silhouette portrait. The note reads, ''My Dear Friend, Mrs. Willard Parker, from Mrs. Belva A. Lockwood. Philadelphia, Penn. Feb. 24, 1906. In answer to your inquiries at the Penn. Wom. Press Assoc. would say I was admitted to the Supreme Court, D.C. in May, 1873 and to the United States Supreme Constl Court of Claims, Feb. 1879.'' Belva Ann Lockwood was the first woman admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court bar and the first woman to argue a case before the Supreme Court. She graduated from the National University Law School (now the George Washington University Law School). Lockwood was the first woman whose name appeared on a ballot when she ran for President as the National Equal Rights Party candidate in 1884 and 1888. Also a well respected writer, she participated in the National Women's Press Association. K.P. Parker (identified on the verso of the silhouette as Kate P. Parker), Lockwood's friend and creator of the silhouette portraiture, inscribes beneath Lockwood's silhouette, ''Had all the 'Women's Righters' Belva's tact, Their hope were long since an accomplished fact!'' Silhouette measures approximately 11.75'' x 11.75'', matted to an overall size of 18'' x 17.25''. Toning and minor soiling, else near fine.
