Portion of Bell Street Baptist Church debris, one of the four churches bombed on 10 January 1957, three weeks after the Supreme Court ruling that Montgomery's bus system was unconstitutional. The Southern churches bombed were Hutchinson Street Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, Mount Olive Baptist Church, and Bell Street Baptist Church. The homemade bombs were made by various Ku Klux Klan members and were formed from sticks of dynamite taped around a metal tube. Scrap of green debris is marked, ''Bell St. a piece of debris 1/11/57'' in the hand of Leonard Ballou, husband of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s personal secretary, Maude Ballou. Measures 6'' x 2.25'' with uneven edges. Very good condition.
