Belcher Mosaic Window
The construction technique used in creating Belcher mosaic stained glass windows has always been a mystery. Even a careful reading of the original patent leaves many questions unanswered. However, it is known that Belcher mosaics went through a series of style changes. The late windows were made entirely from fairly large, chunky glass triangles, and the designs became more crude than refined. In the early years, however, Belcher's glass artists used much smaller pieces of glass, and often employed tiny slivers around borders and elsewhere in their designs. This created much stronger and more delicate detail and also adds to the questions of how all this glass keeps from falling out. The inclusion of the sliver-cut border glass around this window indicates it is from Belcher's earlier work. There are multiple borders, and some pieces are as thin as a fraction of an inch. Also note the very thin and tiny pieces laid out to form the stems of the flowers and foliage. In addition, the veins of the leaves are hand painted and fired-an addition step in the creation of this window that required considerable extra skill and time and which would quickly prove to be too costly to continue. This window is being offered "as found", which is sandwiched between two pieces of clear glass in the present frame which probably built in the 1970s or 80s. This Belcher window have turned up all across the country and this panel was bought with three other unusual pieces that were originally in a house in the mid-West. Note that two large leave and one tiny chip of glass are missing. These could be replaced if necessary. Note also the unusual colors of the background glass and how the overall design shaded from light to dark. This window measures 12" x18" inside the frame and is in excellent condition. The details of the leaves, flowers, and border put it in a special category of Belcher's work.THIS MATERIAL IS READY FOR SHIPPING OR PICK UP. CONTACT THE AUCTIONEER FOR MORE INFORMATION.
