Before Petersburg. Letters from 1st Lt. Andrew Knox, with 1st Regt. Conn. Artillery, unit with railroad carrying cannons at Petersburg. Four letters to his wife: two from Ft. Scott, Va., Apr. 14 and 21, 1864, and two from "Before Petersburg," Oct. 24 and Nov. 20, 1864. 10 -1/2 pp. in all, each with typed transcripts. "...Several officers...will be sworn in for a new term of 3 years for this foolish reason & for the vanity of wearing a new bar on their shoulder straps...Mr. Bill started this morning for Butler's headquarters the other side of the James River to be mustered for an additional period of 3 years...." Filled with remembrances of home and family, disillusionment with military life, except "that I would stay in any capacity if I thought it absolutely necessary..."; changes from living in a house at Ft. Scott to a tent "Before Petersburg...." With a Quarterly Return filed by Lt. Knox, Sept. 1863, of Camp and Garrison Equipment, 6 pp., 7 -3/4 x 9 -3/4 , at Ft. Scott and Petersburg, for 1st Regt. Conn. Artillery. Breaking at folds. Two letters darkly penned, others V.G.; wear at one fold.
