Beautifully etched, gold washed and niter blued presentation sword circa early 19th century; approx. 37-1/2” overall with an approx. 31-1/2” blade, brass cross guard and pommel with ivory grip. The blade has an etched panel with the inscription “His Excellency Caleb Strong”. This sword is in overall very good to excellent condition with approx. 90% of its original niter blue and approx. 95% of its original gold wash in patriotic etchings on both sides of the blade. The ivory grip shows mellow toning and several slight age cracks. Caleb Strong was the sixth and tenth governor of Massachusetts. He was a delegate to the Constitutional Congress that drafted our Constitution but was not a signor. He was born January 9, 1745, and died November 7, 1819. He had a long career in State politics and was involved with the Mass. Militia. He may have carried or used this unusual sword in a State function. An outstanding blade (no scabbard) that should be further researched. Est.: $1,500-$3,000.
