Beautiful old silver trade Cross of Lorraine, approx. 4-1/2” long and hallmarked with an “AS” (possibly Anthony Simmons), in overall good condition showing even wear, engraving to both sides and a beautiful patina. This is the type of silver ornaments that were used in the Indian trade in the late 1700s; according to a publication of the Minnesota Historical Society (Museum Exhibit Series No. 2: copy of pages 59 and 100), this type ofsilver ornament was a major trade item during the aforementioned period and were made mostly in Philadelphia, Albany, Montreal and Quebec; the pieces were sold more as decorative rather than religious pieces;information card from Ramona Morris of Woodside, CA indicates the AS hallmark, Anthony Simmons, was of Philadelphia in the period 1796-1808. A really beautiful and important piece for the early Americancollector. Est.: $400-$800.
