Beautiful Civil War Winter Encampment Long Stem Pipe, made from hand carved mountain laurel with hollowed shrub twig stem held to a bone mouthpiece by a surplus oiler top. Top ring made from a silver inkwell, with figure of a long-bearded soldier wearing an 1858 style forager's cap. During the Civil War, and in all wars for that matter, there were considerable lulls in fighting, especially during winter months when soldiers would have time to work on a myriad of different types of crafts. Judging by the style and size of this pipe, it is reasonable to assume that the craftsman was probably a German immigrant from the New York or New England area. Pictured on page 58 of the monograph, entitled ''Union Infantryman 1861-65'' by Langellier and White. ''Condition is excellent showing light general patina from age. Hallmarked inkwell lid is missing. Beautifully mounted in a dark stained wood and Plexiglas case. Est.: $1,800-$2,400.
