This is a beautiful example of an original, extraordinary condition WWII J. P. Sauer and Sohns M30 Nazi Luftwaffe survival drilling rifle. The M30 Drilling was standard issue to Luftwaffe bomber crews in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater from 1941-43 that provided them with a high quality survival rifle in the event of a forced landing. They are a three-barreled combination gun; double barrel 12 gauge shotgun, over a 9.3X74R rifle barrel. These drilling rifles exhibit the most beautiful pre-war workmanship typical of the J. P. Sauer and Sohns factory. These drilling rifles were all hand fitted and have a beautiful high polish rust blue barrel finish with the beautiful color casehardening finish on the receiver, trigger guard, forend latching mechanism and grip cap. The stock and forend were all made from high grade European walnut that featured an oiled finish that rivaled and usually exceeded anything that was produced in the US. The bottom of the rear barrel lug has a single "stick Eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance mark and the underside of each barrel has the Commercial "Eagle/N" proof marks, along with the bore and gauge/caliber markings, "12/65" and is dated 11-41 for the month and year of manufacture. In addition both the shotgun and rifle barrels are marked: "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL", with serial number "337418" stamped on the underside of the rifle barrel. The right rear breech area of the shotgun barrel also has the larger "Luftwaffe Eagle" Luftwaffe mark carrying the Nazi Swastika. The barrel has a matted rib with brass bead front sight. These drillings have a Greener type cross-bolt receiver/action with a side mounted safety lever. The top left edge of the receiver rail and the rear of the tang is marked with serial number "337418" with the intertwined "SS" proof for the Sauer & Sohns factory along with the Commercial Eagle "N" firing proof on the right side of the receiver. Both sides of the receiver are marked "J.P. SAUER & SOHN SUHL" with a larger intertwined "SS" logo on the underside of the receiver. The stock has a small European oval cheekpiece with a black plastic serrated buttplate that has the intertwined "SS" logo of the Sauer & Sohns factory in the center. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with a large prominent Luftwaffe Eagle/Swastika insignia. The partial serial number, "7418" is stamped on the inside of the forearm. The top of the receiver tang has a sliding barrel selector catch, so that when the rifle barrel is selected the rear rifle sight is raised and engages the forward trigger for firing the rifle barrel. This rifle has a diminutive high quality scroll engraving on the receiver, trigger guard and engraved screw heads, with the forearm and pistol grip finely checkered. The drilling is packed in an aluminum carrying case that has the gray/green painted exterior. The inside lid of the carrying case contains a black stenciled listing of the original contents of the case. The case is divided into compartments for the drilling and this example has a full compliment of various accessories as follows: one full box (10 rds) of Waidmannsheil, Brenneke 12 ga rifled slugs marked on the case "RWS/GECO/12/ROTTWEIL", five loose rounds of 12 ga shotgun shells, with number 4 shot, also marked the same as the shotgun slugs, an original leather sling, one box of 9,3 X 74R rifle shells, (eight total) as produced by the FN factory and so marked on the bottom of the cases, the original small black cardboard box that contains the two piece wooden cleaning rod, with one each, rifle and shotgun bore mop, and one each shotgun and rifle cleaning brush. This lot also includes an original copy of a M30 Drilling owners/operators manual as published and dated August 1941, two original J.P. Sauer & Sohns factory lead seals with waxed strings still attached, that would have been attached to the drilling upon final inspection by the factory. Also included with this drilling is an original small Bakelite case that holds approximately 25 original survival matches. These are the wind-resistant matches that have the heavier sulfur head on them to assist in lighting fires in heavy wind.
BBL: 25 1/2 inch round
Stock: walnut checkered
Gauge: 12/9.3x74
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 337418
Condition: Excellent plus with 99% plus of the original blue finish on the barrels with just some very minor scratches on the barrels from being stored in the aluminum case. The receiver, trigger guard, grip cap and forend attaching assembly all retain 98% plus of the original, deep and vivid case colors. The receiver and barrel markings and engraving are crisp. The highly figured forend and stock are also both in exceptional condition with no handling marks anywhere with excellent checkering. The buttstock was made from a beautiful almost fancy or deluxe piece of walnut that has striping it's entire length, with the forend made from a slightly more plain piece of walnut. The right side of the stock has a very prominent Winged Luftwaffe Eagle acceptance proof (which has a double strike). The bores are bright and shiny. The various accessories and ammunition are all in excellent condition and as noted above the entire drilling has matching numbers.
