This walnut display case contains nine (9) stone plummets. The actual purpose is not entirely known but thought to be medicine stones or charms. They have been found in southern Illinois and this group comes from Greene County, Ill. This part of Illinois is where the confluence of the Illinois River meets the Mississippi River. They may have started as net weights for fishing in shallow waters. But once a location was found to be very productive, the good luck was thought to have been graced by the plummet stones. These stones would be considered "charms" and may have adorned your clothing, a pendant on a necklace, or the bow of your canoe. All have teardrop or plumb-bob shape with a ring groove at the narrow end. (ref. Prehistoric Implements by Moorehead, 1983, p. 280-2, 337). The display glass needs to be replaced. 3 in. Please see photos for details. Certificates of Authenticity may be available for some of the pieces in this lot. State: Illinois, Provenance: Gary Bracken Collection
