Highly desirable Parlophone red label copy of the Beatles’ ‘Please Please Me/Ask Me Why’ in its original sleeve, signed on the A-side in black ballpoint by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. A few marks through George’s first name from Ringo’s prior attempt to establish ink flow and irregular ink adhesion to portions of Lennon’s last name against the silver ‘Parlophone’ lettering (leaving just the impression), otherwise fine condition. Accompanied by a letter of provenance from the original recipient, in full: “I bought the Beatles 2nd single—Please Please Me—from Nems Record Store in Whitechapel, Liverpool, on 10th January 1963. I took it to the Cavern Club a few days later and had it signed in front of me by all 4 Beatles, at the back of the Cavern Club.” Accompanied by a letter of authenticity from noted Beatles expert Frank Caiazzo, stating in part: “These signatures are found on the rare UK red label 45 rpm record for the band’s second single on Parlophone Records...’Please Please Me’ was the first Beatles single to reach #1 in the record charts, and as very few ‘Please Please Me’ 45s were signed by the Beatles, this is an extremely scarce and desirable signed Beatles record.” The ‘Please Please Me’ single was not actually released until January 11th, so she must have either gotten a ‘sneak preview’ or is mistaken about the date she purchased the record. Regardless, the Beatles played at the Cavern Club on January 20 which is most likely when this was signed—after this, they would only appear at the Cavern Club three more times, with their last performance occurring on August 3, 1963. A supremely desirable fully signed example of their wildly successful second single.
