This bayonet was made to fit the Model 1840 and later the 1842 contract muskets. The model 1840 was the last flintlock, while the model 1842 was the first percussion musket. The change in ignition technology included the conversion of the model 1840 to percussion accepting the same bayonet. at 21 in. overall length with a "W" stamp and "H" incuse in the shank of the blade. This bayonet may have been pressed into service at the time of the Civil War. While this bayonet could have been made at Springfield or Harper's Ferry, no markings indicate that construction. It was likely made by an outside contractor hence the limited markings. The overall condition is very good. No scabbard. (ref. worldofbayonets.com/ USA 18th 19th Century).
