Baule (Côte d'Ivoire)
Mask
Wood, vine, pigment
Height: 10 ½ inches Width: 7 3/8 inches Depth: 5 inches

This example shows the careful attention to carving and presentation of the coiffure and the delicate scaling of facial features which are favored Baule characteristics. “The subject of a portrait, most often a woman, sees herself impersonated by a man dancing 'like a woman' and wearing a mask that is her double and namesake.” (Susan Mullin Vogel. Baule. African Art Western Eyes, New Haven: Yale University Press, 1997, p.168). These masks are “usually a portrait of a particular known individual … The idealized faces are introspective, with the high foreheads of intellectual enlightenment and the large downcast eyes of respectful presence in the world” (op. cit., p. 141). Though overall in good condition, there is minor old separation at the top center of the hairdress, as well as on two proper left coiffure elements.

Provenance: Joan Barist Primitive Art, New York
Galeria Flak, Paris

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
