<B>Baule (Côte d'Ivoire)</B></I><BR>Figure of a Seated Trance Diviner<BR>Wood, cord, cloth<BR>Height: 17 inches Width: 4 ½ inches Depth: 5 ½ inches<BR><BR>The typological attribution is based on shared characteristics with an example illustrated by Susan Vogel (Susan Mullin Vogel. “Art and the Individual in Baule Life”, <I>Tribal Arts,</B></I> vol.IV, no. 3, Winter 1997, p.50, fig.8). Of the type, Vogel says: “Figure sculptures for bush spirits, asye usu (fig.8), may be literally interchangeable with the body of a human partner who is a diviner: the spirit inhabits the sculpture when it has not entered and possessed the diviner's own body, inducing a trance state” (<I>op. cit</B></I>., p.47).
