Battlefield Pick-Up. Late war style mid grade Japanese officer Katana, with an arsenal-made blade. It is in the standard 1944 pattern fittings, offically known as Rinji Seikishi or "Special Contingency" version of the Type 98 Shin-Gunto setting, sometimes called the "Type 3". The katana itself measures 39 1/4 inches overall, with a 26 1/4 inch arsenal-made blade. It has a standard bright finish to it, with a straight faux hamon (temper line). the two hole (Mekugi-ana) tang is marked with a two mei stamp, the flat of the tang is stamped "00" followed by a Mantesu Mune Su stamp indicating this sword was manufactured in 1944. The blade mountings are the typical Pattern 1944 era Army style, a copper habaki (blade collar), with an unadorned iron fuchi (grip collar) with spring lock (Bent). The tsuka (handle) has black painted copper Imperial Army cherry blossom menukis (grip decoration), and an unadorned black Kabuto-Gane (Pommel Cap). The Tsuka (handle) has an stingray (Sa-Me) grip panels, covered with complete brown Ito (cloth binding), which is in very good condition, but not wrapped traditionally, which is typical on the P1944 Setting. Single ring steel scabbard with wood insert, unadorned fittings. The sword is missing the tsuba and spacers, has been exposed to the elements for a time with the scabbard and metal fittings showing surface rust and finish loss. The blade is overall bright with patches of dark pitting at the tip. No doubt this sword was picked up on one of the islands by a USGI some time after the action.
