<B>[Battle of the Wabash] Major George M. Bedinger Manuscript Document Signed</B></I> "<I>GMB</B></I>". Two pages (one leaf), 8.25" x 7.5", Fort Washington, Northwest Territory, November 13, 1791, being "<I>A Return of the Killed and Wounded and arms lost in Maj. G. M. Bedingers Battalion 1st Regt. U.S.L. Atry...</B></I>" The return, for Major George M. Bedinger's Winchester battalion of sharpshooters, lists 114 casualties, 50 wounded, and 113 arms lost. Lost from the ranks of officers were two captains, two ensigns, a lieutenant, and an adjutant. The Indians targeted the officers since their distinctive uniforms made them easy targets. Strategically this worked well to Little Turtle's advantage, as the inexperienced troops were left without leadership.<BR><BR>This battle, variously called "St. Clair's Defeat," the "Battle of Wabash River," and the "Battle of the Wabash" was part of the Northwest Indian War. It was fought on November 4, 1791, between the U.S., led by General Arthur St. Clair, and a confederacy of American Indians, led by Little Turtle of the Miamis and Blue Jacket of the Shawnees. It was the worst defeat ever suffered by the U.S. at the hands of the Indians and resulted in George Washington forcing St. Clair to resign his post. George M. Bedinger (1756-1843), a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, would later serve both in the Kentucky state and U.S. legislatures.
