Battle in which Joseph Hooker’s forces defeated Confederate troops at Lookout Mountain in Tennessee on November 24, 1863. Afterward, Captain John Wilson and five soldiers of the 8th Kentucky Volunteers planted the US flag at the crest of the mountain to signal victory. Original 2.25 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Wilson and his soldiers posing with the American flag, captioned in pencil at the top of the image and lower border, “The dear old Flag on Lookout Mountain after Hooker’s battle above the clouds, Capt. Wilson & Men of the ‘Iron Brigade.’” Various repaired tears and creases to borders, otherwise very good condition.
